In a Season of Change, the Credit Union Purpose Remains the Same

It’s that time of year again when the leaves begin to transform from a deep green to vibrant hues of red, orange and yellow. The air has an extra chill to it, and the days become shorter, as we inch closer to the Winter Solstice in December. And in a little over a month, daylight savings time will end, and we’ll all turn back our clocks again. With the constant change that occurs during this time of year, I always find comfort in celebrating the one thing that has never changed — the purpose of credit unions.

From the very beginning, the goal of credit unions has always been to work together to serve others and help them achieve financial well-being. Coming together and collaborating for the betterment of others has continuously driven the credit union movement forward and has been the central focus of credit unions since their inception in 1852. On October 19, we get to celebrate all of that greatness and more for the 75thanniversary of International Credit Union (ICU) Day.

This is by far one of my favorite days of the year because I’m so passionate about credit unions and the work that we strive to do. Through serving our members and participating in community involvement activities, we get to help people every day, and I can’t wait to celebrate that on ICU Day this year.

In case you’re new to the credit union industry, ever since 1948, credit unions have joined together annually on the third Thursday of October to celebrate our movement’s history and achievements. And, like previous years, Vizo Financial is joining more than 87,000 credit unions across the world in 118 countries to celebrate this day.

Since this year marks the milestone 75thanniversary, I encourage you to join the Corporate in sharing our movement’s stories and achievements with the world through social media on October 19 using the hashtag #ICUDay. To make this easier, the World Council of Credit Unions (WOCCU) has provided some promotional materials and celebration ideas that you can utilize at your credit union!

The world around us is constantly changing. Payment solutions are evolving; technology is changing the way we operate; the economy and markets are impacting our financial positions. But throughout all of this, the one thing that has stayed the same is our purpose and commitment to our bettering our members’ lives and the world around us. I, for one, believe that’s something worth celebrating.

Happy International Credit Union Day 2023!
