Bringing Backstage Workers Into the Spotlight: #ILoveMyCreditUnion Day

Most people who know me, know of my love for watching movies, so naturally I’m subscribed to many streaming services; my favorite being Disney+. My family and I enjoy sitting down and watching them together with popcorn and candy, of course, because what’s a movie without popcorn and candy?

We have our favorites: “Moana,” anything Marvel, “Star Wars” or the classics I watched as a kid on The Wonderful World of Disney, and we love seeing the characters play out their parts on the screen for everyone to see. But often times, I find myself thinking about the “backstage workers.” You know the scriptwriters, the directors, the artistic designers/animators and the editors.

As a marketer, it’s only natural that I would think about these backstage workers and how they put in as much time and effort as anyone else to make the movies into the masterpieces that they are. In marketing, a lot of what we do is “backstage.” Nobody sees the work that goes into hosting events or creating podcast episodes. Much like my favorite movies, people only see the final product. And to me, credit unions are also a lot like backstage workers. We support our members and communities in so many different ways so that they can go forth and make a difference in the world — something that will be seen by others.

All across the country, and even the world for that matter, there are credit unions doing astonishing work in their communities. From offering small loans to members who need a helping hand to providing financial literacy programs, we go above and beyond the call of duty as financial institutions. We’re more closely related to a neighbor or a friend, but the rest of the world doesn’t see all the work that we do to serve our communities. That’s because, more often than not, the work that we do stays “backstage” and inside the four walls of our credit unions.

But on July 28, 2023, we’re bringing the backstage workers into the spotlight for #ILoveMyCreditUnion Day, which is where we take over social media and share stories of credit unions and our legacy while using the hashtag #ILoveMyCreditUnion. This is the day where we share how we serve our members and our communities. It’s a day for us to raise awareness about credit unions and our movement and start conversations on social media about all the good that we do.

Vizo Financial has been participating in #ILoveMyCreditUnion Day since its inception, three years ago. Last year, the social media blitz had participants from all 50 states and even 11 countries across the globe. We’re excited to participate again this year, and I would like to invite your credit union to join us.

It’s really simple to participate. All you have to do is share the history of your credit union, the work that your credit union is doing in the community or, simply, why you love working for your credit union on any and every social media channel you have (LinkedIn, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, TikTok, etc.). The big day is happening on July 28, 2023, and we’ll all be using that special hashtag — #ILoveMyCreditUnion. You can also encourage your members to do the same, especially because, this year, if your members follow and tag @ILoveMyCreditUnion on Facebook and Instagram and use the hashtag #ILoveMyCreditUnion in a post, they’ll be entered into a drawing to win a $100 gift card!

To make it easier to participate, the Illinois Credit Union League, ICUL, the creators of #ILoveMyCreditUnion Day, has provided a resource hub with messaging templates, engagement ideas, video pieces, social media graphics and more to help you participate and raise awareness on #ILoveMyCreditUnion Day.

Will you join us in bringing the “backstage workers” into the spotlight? I hope so. I hope you’ll join me, Vizo Financial and other credit unions, CUSOs, leagues, board members and volunteers across the world on July 28, 2023, as we raise awareness about credit unions and the work that we do “backstage” every single day.
